Breeze's story: Super Bowl Sunday last year, i was headed to the store with my 4 yr old. I saw this poor, pathetic, starving dog who was obviously VERY pregnant -- i could see all her bones (ribs, vertebrae, etc), and the poor thing was just HUGE with pups. Add to that her hound dog eyes, and see was the most pathetic thing i had ever seen. I pulled over, just sure that a mama dog would run from me, but she didn't. She had her tail between her legs and cowered as i approached, but let me pet her. After a few minutes, she followed me to my car, let me put her in the back, and came home. When my husband saw her, he melted. Before we could even bring her inside (the high was 30 that day), she started giving birth! The first pup was born in our garage. Then we moved her to the basement, and gave her a towel lined kennel to birth the pups in. She was so weak, and the pups were so huge, that my friend Melissa and i had to pull several out of her. Melissa had to show me how to sling the mucus out of the pups -- if it weren't for her, probably only the first born would have survived, because Breeze was just too spent to try to clean them up. There was one pup that didnt' make it -- our fault; we thought she was done, and when we came back to check on her that pup had been born, but she hadn't gotten it out of its sack and we were too late to save it. But 7 out of 8 grew to be big, healthy pups.
Breeze flourished under our care, and surprisingly had plenty of milk for all 7 pups!! Her teats were so large that they brushed the ground when she walked!! Of course, her short little legs didn't help much in that regard. By the time they were 8 weeks old, every pup had a home in the northeast. Breeze took a little longer, but this angel, Madeline Bartemus, an elderly lady in NH, saw her on the Peace & Paws website, and just connected with her. Her daughter, whom she lives with, told me that they had been looking for several months for the right dog, and for some reason Madeline just couldn't get Breeze out of her mind. They have become companions, and every now and again Madeline emails me an update of how Breeze is doing. As Breeze was diagnosed with Heartworm, Madeline had to wait a bit to get her -- after her treatment and recovery. But she is now happily living with Madeline in NH, and having fun in the snow! She loves car rides and walks every day with her mommy!
I attached a picture of her, after she was healthy and happy, and one of when i was saying goodbye. I'm sure you've seen the picture of Madeline kissing Breeze for the first time! It's such a happy ending! I dont know where she came from, but she sure ended up better!
